Celebrations
Good Bear Day
October 27
Our Good Bears of the World Black Bob Den celebrated October 27th as Good Bears Day to honor the birthday of President Theodore Roosevelt, the man who gave his name to the Teddy Bear.

Students brought a favorite stuffed animal to school for the celebration.  Bears were welcome to come in Halloween costumes.

Academics were integrated into the festivities as we completed the following activities:

Language Arts:  Students wrote letters (Dear Abby style) suggesting solutions for Pooh as to how to get out of a tight place.

Math:  It would not have been a BEARthday without candles!  Birthday candles were used to explore fractions.  Using candles, students were able to name, add, and subtract fractions.

Science:  Our party would not have been complete without balloons.  Students were engaged in  observing, analyzing, and inferring as they were challenged to test the compression of gasses and the effects of air pressure, while completing  experiments using balloons as part of the day's festivities.  To conclude the experiments, the scientific process was integrated into our "BEARthday" celebration as students used water filled balloons to measure how much room a certain amount of matter took up under different circumstances.

Social Studies:  Students will explore cartography (the science/art of making maps) as they devise and create maps for the honey hunt.

Cooperative Games:  The afternoon's celebrations were concluded with relays and races. The bears joined us for the fun and refreshments!
